Memes

Yep, that’s right. I am indeed shamelessly attempting to distract you from noticing that I have not yet blogged about my recent trip. The photos are all downloaded from each of 3 cameras we brought with us, and my travel journal is in order, but the brain’s feeling less than clever so far this week, like a dull dented can of chili con carne (half price!). No signal from the brain means no typey with the fingertips, which means no worthy bloggy post about travel.  What with all the having to actually wake up and put some clothes on and go to work and all that garbage, it’s a wonder I remember anything past 5 minutes ago. How easily one slips into vacation mode and how torturous is the road back to reality.  It’s seriously cramping my style.

So, I thought you could have a little fun amongst yourselves with this meme I found on my pal Knittlesticks’ bloggy.  I’ve seen a few of these recently so I won’t be tagging any of you specifically (feel free to play if you haven’t yet, or even do it again!).  I’ve been having the bestest time checking out everyone’s secret (or maybe not-so-secret) celebrity crushes.  I wonder what they say (if anything) about our personalities?

How to get down with the fun-ness:
a. Type your answer to each of the questions below into Flickr Search.
b. Using only the first page, pick an image.
c. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into fd’s mosaic maker.

1. What is your first name?
2. What is your favorite food?
3. What high school did you go to?
4. What is your favorite color?
5. Who is your celebrity crush?
6. Favorite drink?
7. Dream vacation?
8. Favorite dessert?
9. What you want to be when you grow up?
10. What do you love most in life?
11. One Word to describe you.
12. Your flickr name.

The first thing I wanted to do when I got out of bed this morning was climb back in, pull the covers up to my chin, and lay there all day, possibly just staring at the ceiling with maybe a little nap action thrown in for good measure.  I’m having a meh kind of day.  A meh kind of weekend actually.  I could knit, but I’m not feelin’ it.  I could eat but nothing sounds good.  I could actually do some housework or yard work but seriously, why?  So what better way to accomplish something, without disturbing the meh too much, than to do a meme?  Wendee to the rescue!  My good online pal Wendee, creator of the insanely gorgeous Hazel Knits, has tagged me for the meme I’ve seen cropping up here and there on my bloggy friends’ sites recently.  Thanks Wendee!  It’s good to have some purpose today……

The rules of the game get posted at the beginning. Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?  10 years ago I was working on my Master’s in Microbiology at Washington State University.  I was probably done with classes and just doing research for my thesis.  And most likely I was dicking around a lot with my lab pal (think Mr. Bean), hanging out with hicks, and running a lot.  I was also just about to begin my love affair with iced mochas.  Sound boring?  It was, but it wasn’t.  I was single and enjoying being a singleton.  Everyone should experience that sometime in their life; doing whatever they want without having to consult anyone else or think about long term ramifications.

2. What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order)?

  • Pack up my box of Warm Woolies items to ship off
  • Start a packing list for my trip to the Gulf Islands (we leave Saturday morning!)
  • Go for a bike ride when R. Darling goes for his run
  • Weed & plant some ground cover I bought over the weekend
  • Scrub the stovetop (ugh.)

3. Snacks I enjoy:  Candy!!  But you already knew that ;)  Apples and cheese, crackers and cheese, good fresh fruit, pretzels and pretty much any kind of nut except hazelnuts.

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire:  Before or after I peed my pants with excitement?  First I’d do the usual responsible stuff like pay off all our debts including the house and all loans/credit cards/cars, do the same for both sets of our parents, and invest some of the money.  And then I would travel, travel, travel.  I don’t care where, but Italy would have to be the first place we go.  I don’t think I’d want to work ever again, but R. Darling is one of those types that would probably have to or he’d have a meltdown.  I know it’ll never happen, but it’s still fun to think about.

5. Places I have lived:  Long Beach, CA; My current hometown; Westport, WA & Grayland, WA (7th grade); Rochester, NY (college); Pullman, WA (grad school & after).

6. Jobs I’ve had:

  • Cashier at a local sporting goods store – Ick.  Just ick.
  • Dishwasher in a Neurobiology lab as an undergrad in college – This one was icky too (washing rat brains out of jars is kinda creepy) but at least mildly related to my intended career field.  And the lab folks were pretty nice and very flexible with my ROTC/Crew/College course/lackadaisical student schedule.
  • Data analyst in an endangered bird study on a local reservation – They never let me out in the field and I was never told exactly what I was supposed to do so I spent my day listening to recordings of how many birds they saw and where, and then charting it in some kind of software they had.  I was only there about 4 months before I went off to grad school.  I never even list this on my resume.
  • Microbiologist – With the Field Disease Investigation Unit at WSU.  One of the best jobs I have ever had.  My boss was amazing and even though I spent a good deal of my time tromping around farms covered in, and smelling like poop, I loved my time there.  I would probably still be there if it wasn’t for re-meeting R. Darling and moving back over here.
  • Lab Analyst – I’ve had this job at 3 different labs here in town.  Makes it sound like I’m flaky, but the first 2 labs I was in were entirely dysfunctional and made my whole life miserable.  You never really realize how much a bad work environment affects you until you don’t have to deal with it anymore.  Now I’m at one I love, with people (who I also really dig) that I’ve worked with at all 3 places.  It’s awesome.

7. Peeps I want to know more about:  Hmmm…. there’s so many!  But quite a few of my regular “reads” have already played along.  So, I’ll tag a few and if I missed you, and you feel like it, please play along too and let me know so I can come visit and read your answers :)  I tag:  Yorkshire Lass Knits, Knit One Blog Too, Learner’s Per-Knit, Pursuit of Fiber, and The Yarn Closet.  Have fun!!

Farmhouse Silk Blend

You might just find me in your mailbox someday!

Wow!  Today is my 200th post!  I cannot even believe it.  Lots of you have probably far surpassed this milestone by now, but it’s still amazing to me that I’ve kept with the whole bloggy thing long enough to make it to 200 posts!  As a special thank you to all of you supa-fantastic bloggy peeps out there, since I would never have reached 200 posts in the first place if it wasn’t for all of you, I’m going to have a little contest.  Woot!  I think I like having contests because I never seem to win anything whenever I enter someone else’s.  So if I can’t win any stuff, then at least I can give some of it away ;)

The lowdown:

  1. Please leave a comment by midnight May 22, 2008 telling me how you found my bloggy in the first place and which posts you enjoy most (you don’t have to be specific about that last bit, just let me know if you like the knitting ones best, the travel ones, the ones where I speculate about the nature of my nuttiness, whatever….).
  2. The prize:  One skein of the yarn pictured above which is Farmhouse Silk Blend in a reddish-pink color.  This yarn is dk weight, 34% silk/33% cotton/33% Lamb’s wool and the skein contains 350 yards.  I thought it would make a great scarf (maybe this one?) or perhaps you have an even better project in mind!  Either way, I’ll be looking forward to sharing the yarn with you and seeing what you make out of it.  And there’s a chance a few other secret goodies might find their way inside the envelope too.
  3. On or about May 23, 2008 I will pick one random winner from all the entries and notify them via e-mail and here on the bloggy so everyone else can congratulate them too ;)  And then, ::yippee!::, your package will go out in the mail and you’ll have a new addition to your yarn family!

And now for our meme-tastic portion of the 200th post celebration!

Lady Watkins who I know from the Christmas Swap Kasia and I hostessed last year, as well as the SKC, has tagged me for a book-ish sort of meme.  Nothing that requires me to think too hard or bore you with more sordid details of my 10-fries-short-of-a-Happy-Meal kind o’ habits.  I can dig it.

These are the rules:

  1. Pick up the nearest book of at least 123 pages.
  2. Open the book to page 123.
  3. Find the 5th sentence.
  4. Post the next 3 sentences.
  5. Tag 5 people.

The book:  “Guns, Germs and Steel” by Jared Diamond.  Haven’t read this one yet.  Let’s see….. page 123…..5th sentence, check.

“If the conditions change, different types of individuals may now survive or reproduce better and become “naturally selected”, with the result that the population undergoes evolutionary change.  A classic example is the development of industrial melanism in British moths: darker moth individuals became relatively commoner than paler individuals as the environment became dirtier during the 19th century, because dark moths resting on a dark, dirty tree were more likely than contrasting pale moths to escape the attention of predators.  Much as the Industrial Revolution changed the environment for moths, farming changed the environment for plants.”

Wow, it sounds so much better when you read “moths” instead of “monks” (which I did the first time around).  That would have been a pretty creepy interpretation.  Anyway, I’m going to fight the power and not tag 5 people.  Play or not, whatever feels good.

Happy Monday Bloggy Peeps!

Laura tagged me last week for a “7 Things About Me” meme and since I have absolutely nothing interesting to share today, except for some remarks on the pushy local Starbucks baristas, I thought I’d play along (have you noticed your friendly neighborhood baristas pushing the extra shots as if they were high priced crack? -  Would you like an extra shot?, Are you sure?, Positive?, I’ll give it to you on the house! – Fine.  Give me the damn extra shot! It’s like they can’t fathom someone not wanting that bitter, nasty, extra shot!  Sheesh.).  As if you all aren’t sick and tired of reading about my so-called quirky life, here’s a bit more!  Read or not, at your own leisure.

How to play along:

1. Link to your tagger and post these “rules” on your blog.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

So, here we go…..

  1. I pretty much hate bananas (unless they’re used to make cute little wiener dog photos).  This hasn’t always been the case, but probably a good 8 years ago I decided that they were gross and I never wanted to voluntarily eat another one again.  I would consider eating a semi-green one (yes, I do like them chalky and firm; I like me a firm banana!  Hee.) but maybe only if it was the last fruit on earth and I was starving already.  There are so many other yummier things out there.  Why should I waste my time with something mushy and revolting?
  2. I hate to drive.  I think this is because when I was learning to drive my parents criticized every little thing I did incorrectly (in an effort to help I’m sure) and I ended up not only being fearful of being behind the wheel, but convinced that I was bad at it.  My husband, who teaches driving techniques as a big portion of his job, tells me that I am a great driver but I still get nervous any time I have to drive somewhere especially if it’s an unknown area or a high traffic time of day.  If I ever won the lottery the first person I would hire would be a chauffeur!
  3. I like warm soda.  Actually, I like room temperature water too.  My teeth are extremely sensitive and the cold just kills me.  No ice please unless it’s in my margarita!
  4. I rarely shave my legs.  O.k.  Before you’re all “Gross!”, I’ll explain.  I have, oh, about 5 hairs on each knee and about 3 on each shin.  And when they grow in they are baby fine.  I’ve probably gone about a month before without shaving and R. Darling has never once noticed.  Lucky me ;)
  5. I am extremely shy.  I think this one probably surprises some of you because I have had one or two of you tell me, when I mentioned it to you, that you would never have guessed.  The version of me that you get on my blog and in my e-mails is the true me, but the true me that is usually only witnessed by those people really close to me.  Big groups of people intimidate me and I am most likely to be the one avoiding everyone by hiding outside or stuffing my face so I don’t have to talk.  I am always afraid that people will think I’m stuck up because I don’t talk much so I try to smile a lot in compensation.  I’m sure that it ends up looking creepy or fake but I don’t know what else to do.  Stupid social anxiety disorder!
  6. I used to collect cow poop for a living.  Yeah, the glamorous life!  When I was right out of grad school I worked at the university for about 3 years for the Field Disease Investigation Unit.  We did a lot of studies on dairies and feedlots tracking E. coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella in feed, water, and feces.  We got a lot of strange looks from the farmhands when we’d drive up in our white government vehicles and out would jump all these 20-something girls in coveralls and boots.  Good times.  Good times.
  7. I cannot have my food touching on my plate.  Everything must be completed separated by a good inch or so of space.  And definitely no hot things touching cold things or gravy touching anything except for turkey and mashed potates and gravy.  Heaven forbid if it should ooze on over to the cranberry sauce.  If that happens, I will not touch it.  They should make those little divide-y plates for grown-ups like they have for the kiddies (with Hello Kitty on them too please).  Seriously.  Ewwww.

Alrighty then.  I’d say that’s enough soul searching for today!  And I’m breaking the rules and not tagging anyone since I’ve already tagged most of you at least once already ;)  Play along if you feel like it!

1. Some relationships are meant to teach you something whether they were good, bad, ended, or are still going strong.
2. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is the last concert I saw; it was in Sturgis in 2002 and way awesome.
3. Spring should be here but instead we’re getting snow every morning!
4. Oh no! I forgot to tell you that I ran 1.5 miles on Tuesday night with R. Darling!  My first run in 5 years or more.  Not too shabby to make it that far!  I’m paying for it now though ;)
5. I’ve recently started feeling bummed about the state of clutter in my house.
6. Watching my flowers grow never fails to make me smile.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to watching Dexter episodes with my husband who has been working way too hard recently, tomorrow my plans include meeting a new friend for coffee and Sunday, I want to enjoy a nice lunch with my MIL for her 60th birthday!

Have a snow-free weekend Bloggy Peeps!!  Unless you like that sort of thing ;)

Robin tagged me for a meme!  The game is to list 10 things I have done that others might not have.  Cool :)  This will be tough (I’m quite uninteresting) but fun.  Once I finish my list, I’ll tag 5 other people and leave comments on their blogs to let them know they’re tagged so they can play too.

So check it.  Here’s the 411:

1.  I went to elementary school in what used to be a one-room schoolhouse.  The main portion of the school grew out of the old schoolhouse and they added a few mobile units for extra grades as the number of kids attending increased.  There was a gigantic silver bell at the top of the stairs of the main building and we would beg the recess aide to let us ring it to signal the end of recess and time to go back to class.  It would take two of us to push it back and forth enough to get the bell to clang.  It’s one of my favorite childhood memories.

2.  I rode close to 1000 miles on the back of a Harley to attend Sturgis in 2002.  I would say I earned that “I rode mine” patch I got at the rally!

3.  Related to #2, I also earned my Mardi Gras beads in Sturgis!  I won’t tell you just how many beads I ended up with ;)

sturgis2002a

4.  I have won a spelling bee.  Nothing like the national stuff they do now, but I did win a pizza party for my whole 6th grade class by spelling the winning word in a competition amongst all the other 6th grade classes in our middle school.  The winning word was “procedure”.

5.  I have ridden in a helicopter and swum in a waterfall only accessible by air.  On our honeymoon in 2004 R. Darling and I took a helicopter tour of Kauai and had lunch and a swim at a remote waterfall.  So romantic and so amazingly cold!  But we’re used to that living in the Pacific Northwest.  As we were waiting to board the helicopter, another one landed and one of the passengers came out blowing chunks hard.  The pilot told us that if any of us had trouble with motion sickness we should tell him right now.  I get horribly seasick but I didn’t want to miss out or be the one to spoil the trip so I didn’t say anything.  I spent a lot of the trip worried I’d get sick but I never actually had a moment where I thought I would be.

kauaicopter1

6.  I have eaten off of the same dishes as the Queen of England.  My mom’s grandfather was honored for some of his wartime achievements during World War I by the British Royal Court and included in his gifts was a set of china for his wife bestowed on him by The Queen Mother.  No one in my mom’s family cared about the china except for her and she was given the set by her mother who “hated the stuff”.  A family friend of ours who spent some time traveling in England was astonished to visit Windsor Castle and see the table set with china that looked remarkably like my mom’s.  The set is now mine and it makes me feel like a queen whenever we use it (which isn’t often since I’m scared as hell I’ll break something)!

7.  I rowed crew for 3 years in college despite the fact that I am the exact opposite of a perfectly built oarsman (oarswoman).  I’m really more appropriately coxswain sized but I didn’t know any better when I tried out.  And since it was a club sport at the university I went to, they had to keep me as long as I could hang with the workouts.  The cool thing was, our women’s 4 won the New York State Championships our freshman year.  Go UR Crew!!

8.  I have co-authored 2 papers (under my maiden name) which have been published in respected scientific journals and have done research that contributed to at least 2 more.  The ultimate goal for a lab rat!

9.  I have been invited to, and attended a very sacred Native American religious ceremony.  Very few non-tribal members are ever allowed to see something like this and it was a great honor to be invited.

10.  I have swum with turtles in Hawaii.  One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had!

So that’s my quite boring list!  And now I tag: Knitsabella, Fond of Snape, iKnit.iPurl, p3knitter (The Yarn Closet), & Lisa.  Have fun!  I can’t wait to hear your answers :)

    2. My Thanksgiving traditions include making 2 pumpkin pies the night before; 1 for serving at dinnertime and 1 for breakfast on Thanksgiving day!  And usually, the day after Thanksgiving, I “allow” myself to watch my first Christmas movie of the season.

    3. The best part about Thanksgiving is sharing the day with my family.

    4. My favorite Thanksgiving food is …..Hmmm. That one’s tough because I’m usually the cook and by the time I get to eat, nothing sounds good at all!  But I’d have to say white turkey meat with gravy and pumpkin pie with a buttload of whipped cream.

    5. Not having the turkey ready on time was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me on Thanksgiving.  Not really that big of a deal, but I don’t really have any embarrassing stories that I can remember.

    6. After the meal, I would love to take a tasty nap!  But I usually end up packaging food for people to take home and loading the dishwasher.

    4. I see something blue & fluffy.

Robin and Kasia both tagged me for the “8 Random Things” meme! Oh boy! More stuff about me that you never wanted to know! Seriously though, these are always fun to do and I always love reading everyone else’s, so I had to play along.

    The Rules:

Once tagged, you must link to the person who tagged you. Then post the rules before your list, and list 8 random things about yourself. At the end of the post, you must tag and link to 8 other people, visit their sites, and leave a comment letting them know they’ve been tagged.

    1. I have a “thing” for smooshed pennies. You know those little handcrank machines they put in tourist traps, where you pop in 50 cents and a nice shiny penny, and then you crank while the little machine rolls your penny flat and stamps a design on it? Yep. I’m a sucker for those. R. Darling actually scouts them out for me when we go on trips. And once, on a motorcycle trip that he took without me, he managed to find me a little album made specifically for holding the darn things. Seriously though. They’re shiny, they have a cool design, and you get to destroy money. What’s not to like?

    2. Along the same lines as #1, I collect old pennies. Specifically the ones that have the sheaves of wheat on the back. Whenever I get a handful of change back from a purchase, you can find me sifting through it looking at the backs of all the pennies. Of course, they had to go and make those state quarters (from two different mints) and those funny nickels too, so now I’ve got even more little piles of loose change on my bookshelf. Because, of course, I collect those too.

    3. Elvis was my first crush. I was all of like 7 though, so I didn’t really know what a real crush was all about. I just remember loving his songs and thinking he was the handsomest guy I’d ever seen (we’re talking young Elvis here – think “Blue Hawaii”). I’ve gone for dark-haired guys ever since.

    4. I hate jell-o and most things with jell-o in it. Don’t ask me where the aversion came from, because like most American kids, I grew up eating it. It was never my favorite and after trying it again in a “diet phase” I decided I never wanted to waste another taste bud on it ever again. And fruit in jell-o? Sick and wrong. Totally against the laws of the universe. Why make something gross even grosser? I have however, been known to eat jell-o with alcohol in it (jell-o shot anyone?).

    5. I have huge feet. For my height that is. I just bought athletic shoes last Friday and I had to get a size 9 (I’m only 5’4″)! Of course the extremely nice salesguy tried to reassure me that athletic shoes are sized differently and you want to buy your shoes larger anyway because your feet will swell. Dude, just say it. I know my feet are freakishly ginormous.

    6. Whenever I go to the beach I come home with my pockets full of rocks.  The complicated colors, textures and compositions irresistibly catch my eye as I walk along and I can’t help but want to capture that mini round world to take home with me.  Inevitably, the magic fades once they’re home and they look dull and lifeless and I can’t remember why I picked them up to begin with.  So I’ve started limiting myself to only bringing home 5 or 6 of the prettiest ones I find on a given day at the beach.

    7. I love to sing. And I do it mostly when I’m in the car or cleaning house. And I sing like I really mean it. But never around other people. My husband doesn’t even know what my “real” singing voice sounds like. I’m pretty much an alto so anything in that tone I can sing pretty well, but my range is terrible and anything too high I have to sing louder to try to hit the note properly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Needless to say, there’s very few songs I can sing all the way through without much difficulty. Doesn’t mean I don’t try though.

    8. When I was little I believed in fairies. For reals. And not just the tooth fairy.  I got to thinking that with all those fairies flying around all the time, where do they sleep when they’re traveling?  I figured they needed a fairy hotel where they could get a warm bed and some nice food while they rested between flights.  Remember those cardboard school supply boxes with the flip lids that you used to get when you were a kid?  I took one of those, folded out the lid and made a cozy little bed in the box portion and turned the lid into a table where I laid out a feast of cheerios with peanut butter on top and a glass of fancy city tap water.  My Dad loves to tell anyone who will listen, about how he used to prance into my bedroom at night, pretending to be a fairy of course, rumple the bed and eat the horrific cheerio concotion, then write up a sweet little note and wait for me to wake up all excited about my latest guest at the fairy motel.  Apparently things got tricky when I started comparing the handwriting on the notes and Dad had to get a little more careful with his penmanship.  I think he once resorted to stealing my stash of fairy notes to make sure Wanda’s handwriting didn’t look too much like Cedric the Leprechaun’s.

O.k.  Now you know some really embarrassing stuff about me and it’s my turn to pass the fun around.  So I tag: Wendee, The A.D.D. Knitter, Jess, Lisa, Laura, Jennifer, Maryse, & Didi.  Have fun ladies!!
